Decent SAT Scores for Colleges

As I'm preparing for taking my SATs next year, I keep hearing different stories about what is considered a 'good' SAT score. What is generally considered a good score for most colleges? I know the max is 1600 but what should I realistically aim for?

A 'good' SAT score can vary dramatically based on the specific schools you're targeting, but let's start with some general benchmarks.

Firstly, the current version of the SAT is scored out of 1600 points—800 points each for the Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing sections. The nationwide average SAT score for the current version of the test is around 1050.

Now when looking at more selective schools, you'll find that the SAT score expectations rise.

For example, most selective schools (those with acceptance rates under 50%) typically look for students who score in at least the top 25% nationally, which would be a combined score of about 1200 or above. Highly selective schools (those with acceptance rates under 30%) often expect scores in the top 10% nationally—around 1300 or above. And at the most prestigious universities (like those in the Ivy League), the average incoming freshman often has an SAT score above 1540 - well into the top 1% nationally.

Keep in mind that while standardized test scores like the SAT are an important part of your application, they are not the only factor that colleges consider during the admissions process. Your GPA, course rigor, extracurricular involvement, essays, and letters of recommendation also play a crucial role.

So, when asking what SAT score you should aim for, it would be wise to research the middle 50% SAT scores at the colleges you're interested in - this is often published on the college's admissions webpage or on CollegeVine's School profile pages. A score within or above that range would make you a competitive applicant for that school, in terms of SAT scores at least.
