By the second year, students are expected to declare a major, which can lead to stress and anxiety about their future career path. Also, the novelty of college may have worn off, and students who have not established strong social connections may find themselves feeling isolated or disconnected.

Moreover, the rates can also vary depending on the type of institution (e.g., public vs. private, two-year vs. four-year), the student's personal circumstances, and their preparedness for college (both academically and emotionally). It's a multifaceted issue for sure.
