On a Average, When do College Students Tend to Sleep?

Hey everyone, first time poster here and a current high school junior. I'm trying to get a sense of what a typical college schedule might be like. I know it varies, but does anyone have an idea about when the average college student goes to sleep? I mean, are late night studies a common thing or do most people try to stick to a regular sleep schedule? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello there! As you’ve already noted, sleep schedules in college can widely range among students, depending on their course load, extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, study habits, and personal body clock.

However, research does suggest that many college students get less than the recommended amount of sleep. A University of Cincinnati study found that nearly 70% of college students get less than 8 hours of sleep a night, which is the typically recommended amount for young adults. Typically, late-night study sessions, social events, and other extracurricular activities can contribute to a late bedtime for many students.

That being said, a regular sleep schedule is absolutely possible in college and can be hugely beneficial. Well-rested students are often better equipped to manage stress, perform acadically, and engage in social or extracurricular activities. Developing good sleep habits – such as avoiding all-nighters and setting specific 'bedtime' and 'wake time' – can contribute significantly to overall college health and success.

Just remember, each person’s sleep habits are different, and what works for one person may not work for another. Your goal should be finding a schedule that works best for you and helps you be as rested and productive as possible.
