College Application Timeframes

So when do most colleges start accepting applications? I'm feeling a bit lost about when I should start preparing my materials and would like to plan out my timeline properly.

The majority of colleges in the US open their application portals around August, typically on August 1 for those that use the Common App or the Coalition App. That's generally when you'll be able to start submitting your application materials, though there's a lot of work you can do before then to get ready.

Here's a general timeline you might find helpful to follow:

- Spring of Junior Year: Research colleges, ideally visiting campuses (in-person, or virtually if needed). Start brainstorming and drafting your college essays. If you haven't taken the SAT/ACT or are unsatisfied with your scores, this is also a good time to prepare and register for these exams. Keep in mind that some colleges have gone test-optional so standardized test scores might not be a requirement for all of them.

- Summer before Senior Year: Finalize your college list. Continue working on your college essays and start filling out the Common App or other application forms as they open. Make sure you know if any of your colleges require supplemental essays.

- August-October of Senior Year: Complete and submit all parts of your applications, especially if you are planning on applying Early Action (EA) or Early Decision (ED) - these deadlines are usually in early to mid-November. Remember to line up your letters of recommendation early, as your recommenders will need time to write them.

- November-January of Senior Year: This is when most Regular Decision (RD) applications are due.

- March-April of Senior Year: Decisions from colleges are usually released during this timeframe. Once you have all of your admissions decisions, you can compare any financial aid offers you received and make your final decision.

- May 1st of Senior Year: This is known as National Decision Day, the day by which most colleges require you to confirm your attendance if you've been accepted.

Remember to keep track of the individual deadlines for the schools you're interested in because they can vary. Also take into account some universities have rolling admissions and will accept applications until spaces are filled. Best of luck with your applications!
