Space is the limit: Where do astronauts go to college?

Hi guys! Curious junior here. Looking at some of our very own space explorers, is there an academic path that most astronauts tend to take in college? Are there any specific majors or universities that are known for producing astronauts? It would be cool to know just in case I decide to reach for the stars one day. Thanks in advance!

Astronauts come from a variety of educational backgrounds, but they tend to share a strong foundation in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Many tend to major in engineering, physics, or related disciplines. A master's degree or a Ph.D. is also common among astronauts and is often highly preferred by selection committees. You'll also find astronauts with degrees in Medicine which can be particularly useful for research in space. This is not an exhaustive list of subjects, as the important thing is having a strong technical background.

As for universities, it's a diverse range. However, a few universities have produced a notable number of astronauts. For example, many astronauts have attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Purdue University has graduated 27 astronauts as a civilian university and is called the "cradle of astronauts."

It's also worth noting the importance of real-world experience. For instance, a significant number of astronauts come from military backgrounds, especially the Navy and Air Force. This often provides the opportunity to become a pilot, which is another common background for astronauts.

Finally, don't forget that besides academic and experiential qualifications, becoming an astronaut involves a rigorous selection process, medical evaluations, and extensive training. So, while chasing those stars, remember it's a journey that goes beyond the classrooms of university. Best of luck with your journey, whether it leads to space or not!
