Most Homework-Intensive Colleges?

So, I've heard some horror stories about colleges overloading students with homework and others where it's much more manageable. It would be great if anyone could shed some light on this - have you guys heard of any colleges which are notorious for giving a ton of homework?

From what I've gathered, the workload can vary vastly depending not only on the college, but also on your major and the specific classes you choose to take. That said, a number of colleges have developed a reputation for being more academically rigorous and homework-intensive. For example, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Chicago have renowned reputations for deploying hefty workloads to their students, in line with their highly academic culture.

Colleges that have an Engineering or Science focus, such as California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), or Johns Hopkins (for their pre-med and Biomedical Engineering students) also tend to require a significant amount of work outside of class.

Liberal arts colleges like Swarthmore, Reed, and Haverford, also have a reputation for being workload-intensive due to their emphasis on in-depth understanding and critical thinking.

However, it's essential to note that a heavy workload isn't necessarily a bad thing. These assignments often contribute to an in-depth understanding of the materials, preparing you well for the future, either in further schooling or your specific career. Each school is likely to have resources to support students in managing their time effectively, such as academic advisors, tutor programs, and student-run study groups.

Remember, it's the quality of your work and what you actually learn that counts, not merely the quantity.
