Does the college's NFL player recruitment record matter when I apply?

Hey folks. I'm a HS junior who loves football and hopes to get into a university with a strong football program. But does the number of NFL players a college has produced over the years really impact the college admissions decision for a student like me, especially if I'm not being recruited? Like, would it be too dreamy of me to eye universities with high NFL player numbers, say from the last 5 to 10 years? Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from those who've been through similar situations.

Hey there! It's great that you're pursuing something you're passionate about, and choosing a school with a strong football program can definitely enhance your college experience. However I'd like to clarify something important. Generally, the number of NFL players a college has produced doesn't directly influence college admissions decisions for non-recruited athletes.

Although colleges with strong football programs that frequently send players to the NFL do tend to have competitive athletic departments, the underlying strength of their programs may not play a significant role in admissions for students not being recruited. When the college reviews your application, they are primarily focused on your academic performance, test scores (if required), essays, and extracurricular activities that demonstrate your skills, passion, and commitment outside the classroom.

So, go ahead and dream! Aim for those schools with great football programs if you like, but ensure your academic profile aligns with what these schools are looking for. In addition, keep in mind that while it's cool being at a school known for its athletics, you should also make sure it's a place where you'll fit in academically and socially. Places where you can excel in the classroom, find other extracurriculars you enjoy, and where you feel a strong sense of community.

For students like yourself who love football but aren't being recruited, consider how you can incorporate your passion for the sport into your application. Maybe write an essay about how football taught you teamwork or leadership. Perhaps you've volunteered in youth football leagues or started a blog for game analysis. Show them that football is more than just a game for you, and they might appreciate the diverse perspective you can bring to their campus.

Lastly, remember, the goal ultimately is to get a quality education. Football can greatly enrich your college experience, but keep your long-term objectives in mind. Choose a school that aligns with your academic goals and where you'll enjoy living for the next four years.
