Eco-Friendly High Schools

I am extremely passionate about the environment. So, I've been considering schools that have strong green initiatives. Can you recommend any high schools known for being especially eco-friendly or having strong sustainability programs?

Absolutely, different schools around the country are making strides towards environmental consciousness.

Berkshire School in Sheffield, Massachusetts for instance, is known for its commitment to the environment. They have an environment center on campus dedicated to teaching students about sustainability practices. In addition, they also operate a 2.3-acre solar field and have strong recycling and composting programs. Their curriculum also emphasizes sustainability and stewardship.

Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C, is another example. It features green roofs, a vegetated cover that absorbs rainwater and provides insulation. Sidwell also has an onsite wastewater treatment system and uses sunlight to naturally light buildings reducing energy requirements. Besides, this theme extends to their curriculum and student projects which often emphasize sustainability.

Lastly, there's the Green School in Bali, Indonesia. Although it's not within the U.S., I still thought it was worth mentioning in your quest for a sustainable educational environment. It's made almost entirely from sustainable bamboo and is powered by renewable energy sources. It advocates for "environmental wisdom" in its curriculum and gives students practical experience in sustainable living.

Remember though, if you are looking to stay closer to home, many schools are now integrating sustainability into their curricula and campus management practices, so considering local schools can also be a valid option. Think about reaching out to guidance counsellors, present students, or alumni at schools you're considering to see what initiatives they offer. Visiting schools (virtually or in person) is another way to get a feel for their commitment to the environment. You know what they say, actions speak louder than words!

In conclusion, just because a school isn't "known" for being eco-friendly, that doesn't mean they aren't making significant strides in sustainability. Always look closely at school values and initiatives during your selection process.
