What educational level do most materials scientists achieve?

I'm a junior considering a career in materials science and I wanted to get a feel for what college degree level most professionals in this field usually complete. Do most go for a Bachelor's degree or do they typically go further into grad school?

Materials science is a very multi-disciplinary field and while it is possible to begin work in this field with a Bachelor's degree, it's often the case that professionals in this field pursue further education for more specialized roles. A Bachelor's degree in materials science can lead to entry-level research or jobs in development, quality control, or technical sales.

However, for roles that are more research-intensive or for individuals aiming for higher positions within their organizations, a master's degree or even a doctoral degree (PhD) is often preferred or even required. This advanced education allows materials scientists to specialize in a particular area of the field, such as polymers, ceramics, metals, or composites, or to focus on research and development.

Take, for example, those working in academia or advanced research positions who often possess a PhD. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics also notes that job candidates with a master’s degree and PhD will likely face less competition compared to those with a bachelor’s degree.
