What electives do most high school students take?

I'm just beginning to choose my electives for next year. I'm curious about what the most commonly-chosen high school electives are. Should I go mainstream, or should I try something unique and off the beaten path?

High school classes often offer a wide array of electives, but some are more common than others based on their relevance to various careers and college majors. Here are some frequently chosen electives:

1. Foreign language classes like Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, etc., which can be useful for college applications and future job prospects.

2. Business-related classes such as Intro to Business, Personal Finance, or Economics are often popular since they provide useful life skills.

3. Psychology is also a favorite elective due to its relevance to everyday life as well as several career paths.

4. For those interested in STEM, electives like Computer Science, Astronomy, or Advanced Math classes are often preferred.

5. Visual or performing arts classes, such as Drama, Painting, Sculpture, or Music, are popular among students who love to express their creativity.

6. Some students take College Prep or Advanced Placement (AP) classes as electives too, to challenge themselves academically and earn college credits.

I would suggest considering your interests and potential college major when choosing your electives. If there's a class on a unique topic that aligns with your interests, like Marine Biology, Film Study, or Robotics, don't shy away from enrolling in it! Taking unique electives can give you interesting material for college admissions essays and show colleges your genuine passion and curiosity.
