Intrigued by HBCUs: What to Expect?

Hey all, I’m a junior thinking seriously about applying to HBCUs. I've heard a lot about the community and unique experiences they offer. Can anyone who's gone through the process share what to keep in mind specifically when looking into HBCUs as opposed to other schools? Really want to make sure I understand what makes them special!

Hi there! As a parent whose child is currently attending an HBCU, I'm happy you're considering them as an option. HBCUs truly offer a one-of-a-kind experience with a strong sense of community and history. One thing to keep in mind is that, like any university, each HBCU has its own culture and strengths. Research each school's academic programs to find your fit – some have renowned engineering departments, while others excel in the arts, for instance.

Also, consider the campus life aspects, like Greek life, which is significant at many HBCUs, contributing to the tight-knit community and network. Additionally, HBCUs often have smaller class sizes which can offer a more personalized learning environment. Lastly, look into scholarships and initiatives that are unique to HBCUs; there are often financial benefits that can make education more accessible. Visiting a campus, if possible, can give you a feel for the vibrant life and energy on HBCU campuses – something my child absolutely fell in love with during their search. Good luck!
