Need clarity on ED 2 Schools

Hi folks, I’ve been hearing a lot about something called ED 2 while researching college applications. Can someone please explain to me what this ED 2 thing is all about and which schools offer it? Also, how does it impact my chances if I decide to choose this option?

Sure, happy to clear that up! ED 2, or Early Decision II, is a second round of Early Decision offered by some colleges and universities. Just like the first round of Early Decision (ED 1), ED 2 is binding. That means if you're accepted, you're obligated to enroll, unless the financial aid package provided by the school isn't sufficient.

The caveat here is that ED 2 deadlines are typically a bit later (often in January), giving applicants additional time to put together their application. Another advantage of ED 2 is its use for students who were denied or deferred during their ED 1 application elsewhere. It allows them a second opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to a top-choice school with an increased likelihood of acceptance.

Many schools offer this option – to name a few examples: University of Chicago, Emory University, Vanderbilt, and Tufts University. I would strongly recommend checking the admissions page of each specific college that you're thinking of applying to, in order to see whether they offer this option.

As for your chances, similar to ED 1, applying ED 2 can increase your chances of admission. The exact benefit can vary from school to school, but in general, admissions rates in ED 2 are typically higher than in Regular Decision. But remember, because it's binding, you should only apply ED 2 if you're absolutely certain that it’s the school you want to attend and it aligns with your family's financial abilities.
