Timing for First SAT Attempt?

Hi fellow juniors! When do people usually take their first SAT? I want to make sure I start prepping soon enough but not too early, you know? Plus, I don't want to miss out on any better opportunities for prep courses and all that.

Hello there! Generally, students aim to take their first SAT in the spring of their junior year, typically around March or May. This timing allows for ample preparation and also provides opportunity to retake the exam, if needed, during the early fall of senior year. Prep courses can be useful, but many students also find success with self-study, using online resources or prep books. Starting your prep a few months before the test date should give you enough time to familiarize yourself with the format, work on practice questions, and identify areas for improvement.

If you're planning to apply Early Decision or Early Action to colleges, taking the test in spring gives you time to focus on your applications over the summer. Remember, it's important to balance preparation with your schoolwork and extracurricular activities since colleges will be looking at your overall profile, not just test scores. Be sure to register for the test a few months in advance to secure your spot and to ensure you don't rush your preparation. Good luck with your studies and test prep!
