Ideal Timeline for College Applications?

Hey guys, I'm sure this has been asked before but when should I really start the college application process? I'm looking for any advice on not just when to start, but also things like when to visit colleges, when to write essays, etc. Thanks in advance!

It's smart that you're planning ahead for such an important process. Generally, it's good to start preparing for college applications in your junior year, or even earlier if possible. Begin by researching colleges you're interested in and consider making visits during the spring of your junior year or the summer before senior year. This is when schools are still in session, so you'll get a realistic feel for campus life.

As for standardized tests, aim to take them in the spring of your junior year. This gives you time to retake them if needed in the fall of your senior year. It's also wise to start drafting your college essays over the summer before senior year when you have more free time. This will help decrease the stress during the hectic fall application season.

Regarding applications, you'll want to start those as soon as they open, which is typically in August before your senior year. Keep in mind that deadlines for early action/decision are usually in November of your senior year, while regular decision deadlines fall in January. Create a checklist with all the deadlines and required materials for each school to stay organized.

Always reach out for help when needed, whether it's to a counselor, teacher, or admission representative. The process can be daunting, but with an organized approach, you'll be on your way to submitting compelling applications! Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint, so take your time to ensure everything you submit reflects your best self.
