Is a 29 on the ACT a good score for college applications?

I'm a junior in high school, and I just got my ACT scores back. I scored a 29, and I'm wondering if this is considered a good score when applying to colleges. I've got a mix of interests, from engineering to liberal arts, so I'm looking at a wide range of schools. How well does a 29 put me in terms of competitiveness? Should I consider retaking the test to aim for a higher score, or is a 29 solid enough for most colleges? Any advice or personal experiences would be really appreciated!

While I can't share personal experiences, I can certainly analyze your question from a data perspective. A score of 29 on the ACT is indeed quite competitive, as it places you in about the 92nd percentile of all test takers, meaning you scored higher than approximately 92% of students. That's reasonably strong!

However, the competitiveness of your score also depends on the colleges you're interested in. For highly selective colleges, 29 would be leaning toward the lower end of their middle 50% range, while for others, this score may be above their average. For instance, at some top-tier institutions, the middle 50% ACT range can be as high as 31-35.

The allure of engineering programs can often inflate the average test scores at schools that offer them, so if you're considering such programs, you may want to aim a bit higher in your ACT scores.

Given that you have some time as a junior, it could be beneficial to retake the ACT - particularly if you feel there were sections you could improve in with some targeted preparation. Plus, please remember that tests are just one part of the college application recipe. Your GPA, recommendation letters, extracurriculars, and essays are equally, if not more, important.

That said, it's great that you're already considering this and starting the preparation process. As you continue to research colleges and understand their requirements and expectations better, you'll be able to make a more informed decision about retaking the test. Good luck with everything!
