HBCUs and Athletic Opportunities

I'm a track athlete and I've been looking into HBCUs with strong athletic programs. Could someone break down the various athletic conferences that HBCUs compete in? I'm trying to gauge not only the level of competition but also the community and support around athletics at these schools

Hey there! It's exciting to hear you're considering HBCUs for your athletic and academic career. HBCUs are known for their vibrant communities and supportive atmospheres, especially when it comes to their athletic programs. For track athletes like yourself, you'll primarily be looking at schools within two major conferences: the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Historically, these conferences have been very competitive, with schools competing at the NCAA Division I level in the MEAC and both Division I and II in the SWAC.

You'll find a tight-knit, encouraging environment among athletes and students at these institutions. Community events, games, and matches are often central to the campus experience, and you can expect plenty of support from both staff and your peers. Besides MEAC and SWAC, some HBCUs also participate in other conferences like the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), which are part of the NCAA Division II and also boast strong athletic communities.

Each school has a unique culture, so I recommend visiting the campuses, if possible, to get a feel for the environment. Don't hesitate to reach out to the coaching staff, and maybe even reach out to current athletes on the team to hear firsthand about their experiences. Take the time to see where you can see yourself thriving not just as an athlete, but as a student and a member of the community as well!
