What is the average college acceptance rate I should expect?

As I start narrowing down the colleges I want to apply to, I'm trying to get an idea of what the average acceptance rate is for colleges in general. I know it varies a lot between schools, but I want a ballpark figure so I can manage my expectations. Are there certain types of colleges that tend to have higher or lower acceptance rates? Also, how should the acceptance rate influence my application strategy, if at all?

Generally speaking, acceptance rates can range widely across colleges and universities. At highly selective schools, like the Ivy League and comparable institutions, acceptance rates often fall below 10%. Meanwhile, some state universities and less competitive private colleges might have acceptance rates that exceed 50%. According to the National Association for College Admission Counseling, the average acceptance rate across all four-year institutions in the U.S. was about 66.7% as of 2018. However, this figure is just an average and doesn't paint a full picture of the diversity in acceptance rates across schools.

Certain types of colleges do tend to have higher or lower acceptance rates. Often times, schools that are more selective, have a renowned reputation, or offer unique programs can have lower acceptance rates because of the high volume of applications they receive. Colleges with more accessible admission criteria or larger student populations may have higher acceptance rates.

As for how this should influence your application strategy, it's prudent to apply to a range of schools based on their selectivity. Create a list that includes a set of match schools (where your academic qualifications closely align with the average admitted student's), reach schools (where your qualifications are a bit inferior to the average admitted student's), and safety schools (where your qualifications surpass the average admitted student's). This approach can help to ensure you have options at the end of the admission process. However, always remember that fit with the college's culture, programs of study, location, size, etc., should also be considered alongside acceptance rates when selecting schools to apply to. You want to ensure the school is a good fit for you as a student and aligns with your academic and personal goals.
