How Are the Dorms at Ohio State University?

Hey everyone! I'm starting to prepare my applications for colleges, and Ohio State University is definitely on my list. I've heard a lot about their campus, but not much about the dorm experience. What are the dorms at OSU really like? Do first-year students have any options, or is it all just randomly assigned? I'm trying to picture where I'd be spending my freshman year if I end up going there. Any insider info would be awesome!

The dorms at Ohio State University, officially referred to as "residence halls", offer an exciting range of variations which can accommodate different preferences. If you end up living on campus, you'll be assigned to one of three "residential areas": North, South, and West each having its own unique vibe and community.

North Campus typically houses many STEM-focused majors. Its residence halls, such as the newly renovated Torres and Bowen House, are generally newer with modern facilities. South Campus is closer to the downtown area and many social life areas on campus, making it appealing for students who prefer a lively, bustling atmosphere. Smith-Steeb and Park-Stradley are popular halls there. West Campus is often quieter, more secluded, and it tends to house upperclassmen, though freshman might be placed there, too, if other options are filled.

The room setups can include traditional doubles, singles, and even some suites and quads for first-year students. Amenities vary depending on the halls, but many of the newer or recently renovated ones include air conditioning, private or semi-private bathrooms, and common study spaces.

First-year students typically don't choose their specific residence hall. You rank your preferences in terms of room type and learning communities, and you're eventually placed based on where space is available. Your specific dorm, room, and roommate are often randomly assigned from among those preferences. Roommate selection has a separate process if you're looking to room with someone specific.

Of course, do keep in mind the college living experience isn't solely defined by the physical dorm. It's also about the community you build with your hallmates, the events put on by your Resident Advisors, the academic support and learning communities OSU offers, and balancing dorm life with everything else college has to offer.
