What scholarships are available at UT Knoxville?

I'm a junior in high school planning to apply to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and I want to learn more about the scholarships available. Are there specific scholarships that I should definitely apply for or ones that are geared towards students with certain academic or extracurricular achievements? Any advice on how competitive these scholarships are or tips for a strong application would be really appreciated!

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville offers a variety of scholarships for incoming freshmen. These are separated into two categories: admissions-based scholarships and competitive scholarships.

Admissions-based scholarships, also known as automatic scholarships, are awarded to incoming freshmen based on academic achievements without the need for a separate application. The Volunteer Scholarship, for instance, is an automatic scholarship provided to Tennessee residents who have at least a weighted high school GPA of 3.8 or ACT composite score of at least 30 (or SAT EBRW+Math score of at least 1360). Non-resident students can qualify for a similar scholarship called the Provost Scholarship with the same academic benchmarks.

Competitive scholarships, in contrast, require an additional separate application beyond the admission application. The Haslam Scholars Program is one of the most prestigious and, as the name implies, one of the most competitive scholarships at UT Knoxville. The program provides its recipients with funding which covers tuition, room and board, a study abroad experience, and more. It is geared towards students who excel academically but also have strong records of leadership and service. Unfortunately, the Haslam Scholars Program is invite-only, meaning you will have to be shortlisted for the scholarship based on your admissions materials.

Applying for and winning a scholarship can be highly competitive considering the large pool of potential students applying to the university each year. It's critical that your scholarship applications clearly demonstrate your academic and extracurricular achievements, along with your potential to bring value to the university community. Having a clear 'spike' or highly-developed specialty in your application can make you stand out amongst other applicants.

In regards to tips for a strong application, make sure you start working on the application early, follow all instructions, and ensure it's free from errors. For essays, avoid cliché topics and instead focus on experiences that truly make you unique. Your letters of recommendation could also play a significant role, so consider asking mentors who really know your intellectual capacity and character, and can speak specifically to your accomplishments and potential.

Don’t forget to file your FAFSA as early as possible because some scholarships might require this. Check the university’s financial aid page for more details and deadlines.

Keep in mind that this is just a rough guide. For specifics about each scholarship such as eligibility, deadlines, or amounts awarded, you should visit the university's scholarship page or reach out to the UT Knoxville’s Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.
