IB vs AP for college admissions: Does it really make a difference?

Okay, so I need to pick my classes for next year, and I'm stuck between IB and AP. What's generally more impressive to colleges, or does it not really matter? Would love some advice here, it's kinda making me anxious.

You're asking a really good question, and it's understandable that you want to make the best decision for your future college applications. Rest assured, both IB and AP courses are respected by colleges as they both demonstrate a student's willingness to engage in rigorous coursework.

Whether one is considered 'more impressive' than the other can depend on a few factors. Some colleges are known for favoring the International Baccalaureate (IB) because of its global perspective and the diploma program's comprehensive curriculum that includes a theory of knowledge course and a research paper. On the other hand, Advanced Placement (AP) courses allow for more flexibility in subject choice and are widely recognized in the U.S.

Think about what aligns better with your learning style and interests. Do you enjoy a more structured program that encourages critical thinking across a wide variety of subjects (IB), or do you prefer the option to select specific subjects that interest you and might align with a prospective major (AP)?

Also, consider the offerings at your school – does it have a strong IB program with good teacher support, or does it have a more developed AP program? Sometimes the best choice is the one where you’ll have the best support and resources.

Ultimately, colleges want to see that you've challenged yourself and excelled in those challenges. Both paths can demonstrate that well. And remember, it's totally fine to mix and match if that's an option at your school, taking AP classes alongside IB courses to create an academic program that suits you.
