I'm thinking about attending college in New Orleans and wanted to hear about some experiences or opinions you guys have on schools there. How is the campus life? Are there unique opportunities in the city for students, both academically and socially? I'd love any insights into the vibe and community aspect of studying in New Orleans.
New Orleans is indeed a unique city with a rich cultural heritage that can offer plenty of opportunities to students academically and socially. The two main colleges in the city are Tulane University and Loyola University New Orleans.
Starting with Tulane, it is known for its strong academic programs, especially in areas like Public Health, Architecture, and Business. Tulane is also notable for its community service requirement, connecting students to the local community right from their first year. Socially, the campus has an active Greek life, and academic-based clubs too. It's located in a beautiful uptown neighborhood, which is just a streetcar ride away from downtown.
Loyola University New Orleans, right next to Tulane, is a Jesuit institution known for programs in Music and the arts, Business, and Communications. Like Tulane, they have a variety of clubs and activities for students to get involved in, and also integrate the vibrant local culture into their programs. For example, their Music Industry Studies program takes full advantage of New Orleans' musical heritage.
Outside of classes, New Orleans as a city is like a vibrant and ongoing festival. Historically, the city is known for its jazz clubs, delicious Cajun and Creole cuisine, the famous French Quarter, and of course, Mardi Gras.
Academically, New Orleans is also a hub for health and environmental science due to its coastal location and the presence of medical institutions. Opportunities for internships and experiential learning abound.
From a community aspect, people in New Orleans are generally viewed as quite friendly. There are often community events like art markets and music festivals, as well as opportunities to get involved in local causes.
Keep in mind every student’s experience will differ depending on their program of study, living arrangements, personal interests, and more. It's always a good idea to visit the city and the campuses if you have the opportunity, and don't hesitate to reach out to current students or alumni for their perspective.
