What's an Ivy League school, and why are they so prestigious?

I've heard a lot about Ivy League schools, and I know they're supposed to be really prestigious. But I'm not entirely sure what makes a school part of the Ivy League, or why they're held in such high regard. Is it just about the academics, or is there something else that sets them apart? If I'm considering applying to one, what should I know?

The term "Ivy League" actually came from the athletic conference in which these schools compete, but it has since come to signify academic excellence, tradition, and prestige.
