What are some scholarships for music students?

I'm really passionate about music and considering pursuing it in college. Does anyone know of any scholarships that are targeted specifically towards music students, whether it's performance, composition, or music education? I'd like to start compiling a list to prepare for applications. It would be great to hear from anyone who has applied for these too, to understand the qualifications they look for.

There are indeed numerous scholarships out there that cater to students interested in music, from performing to composition. I'll outline a few examples, but it's always a good idea to perform your own extensive research to identify more possibilities.

1. The Catherine Herrington Hampsten Music Scholarship is a wonderfully unique opportunity. It targets high school seniors who might be planning to major in music in college.

2. The Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award is a notable one for undergraduate music students who have achieved academic and musical excellence during their junior year.

3. The Chopin Foundation of the United States provides scholarships to talented young American pianists who take part in the National Chopin Piano Competition.

4. John Lennon Scholarships are open to both undergraduate and graduate students who show excellent songwriting or composing abilities. These scholarships award up to $20,000 to three students each year.

5. Lastly, The ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Foundation awards numerous scholarships to young composers. Scholarships are available in various music styles, including pop, symphony, and film scoring.

Remember to check the specific eligibility criteria and application guidelines for each scholarship. Be prepared to provide a portfolio or audition recording in many cases, as performance is often an important factor for music scholarships. Good luck with your search and applications!
