Required High School Classes for College Admission

What high school classes do I need to take to be eligible for college? I want to make sure I'm on track with the right courses to meet college requirements and also prepare for my intended major. Thanks so much!

In general, colleges look for successful completion of the following types of high school curriculum:

1. Four years of English: These classes typically include American and English literature, composition, and sometimes additional offerings like creative writing or journalism.

2. Three to four years of Mathematics: Math classes should include Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. Many colleges prefer if students also take a course in Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, or Calculus.

3. Three to four years of Social Studies: These typically include courses on U.S. History, World History, Geography, Government, and Economics.

4. Two to three years of Laboratory Science: These ideally include Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. Some colleges prefer that students also take a higher level science such as Anatomy, Environmental Science, or AP Biology/Chemistry.

5. Two to four years of a Foreign Language: Colleges often like to see at least two years of the same foreign language, but more competitive colleges may prefer three or four years of the same language.

6. One year of Visual or Performing Arts: This requirement varies greatly among schools, but some ask for at least one year in an art, music, theater, or dance course.

In addition to the above, many colleges also like to see elective courses that align with your planned college major. If this information is not known, colleges may prefer to see a well-rounded curriculum of electives. This may include additional science, math, or English classes, as well as courses in subjects like psychology, sociology, business, computer science, or journalism.

Do note that the above list is a typical baseline, and some colleges might have some specific requirements. Also, highly selective colleges will expect more rigorous courses, such as Honors, AP, or IB courses.

For instance, if you intend to major in engineering, taking advanced mathematics and science coursework (like AP Calculus and AP Physics) in high school would be beneficial. If you're leaning toward a major in the humanities, colleges will appreciate seeing advanced English, history, or social science classes, possibly including AP or IB classes in these subjects.

In order to be absolutely certain, I recommend considering where you might want to apply to college and checking out the admission requirements on each school's website. This will give you the most accurate information. Good luck!
