How to Choose the Right Teachers for Common App Recommendation Letters?

Starting to stress out a little about recommendation letters for the Common App. How did you all decide which teachers to ask? I'm torn between teachers where I got great grades versus those who really know me as a person. Any tips on striking the right balance there?

Finding the balance in selecting teachers for your letters of recommendation is indeed important. It's essential to choose teachers who not only have seen your academic success but can also speak to your character and personal growth. While good grades are impressive, a teacher who knows you well will be able to provide a more personal and detailed letter. Think about teachers who can attest to traits such as your work ethic, curiosity, and how you handle challenges, as these are often more telling than a transcript.

For example, if you actively contributed to discussions, showed interest beyond the curriculum, or demonstrated resilience in improving your performance, these are experiences worth highlighting. If possible, a blend of both—a teacher from a class where you performed well and who has insight into your personality—would be ideal. Lastly, don't hesitate to have a conversation with potential recommenders about your goals and why you value their endorsement; this can help them tailor their letter to best support your application. And remember, give them plenty of time to write the letter; rushing them isn't beneficial for anyone.
