Importance of 8th Grade Academics in High School

Hey, quick question... does 8th grade matter when it comes to high school academics? I mean, will high schools look back at your 8th grade performance or does it basically start fresh once you hit 9th grade? A bit stressed because my 8th grade was rough.

Hello there! I understand your concerns about the transition from 8th grade to high school, but let me reassure you – typically, high school does start with a fresh slate academically. While some middle school classes, particularly if you've taken high school credit courses in 8th grade, could impact your high school transcript, the general 8th grade courses are not usually included. So, unless you've taken courses for high school credit, your academic record won't start to take shape for college admissions until 9th grad.

Moreover, high school is an excellent opportunity for a fresh start and to demonstrate growth. Colleges, if they ever see your 8th grade performance due to high school credits, will be more interested in how you've progressed since then. They consider the trajectory of your academic performance and your maturity throughout high school, more so than a rough patch during middle school. So, take a deep breath, focus on doing your best in high school, and use any setbacks as learning experiences. Your dedication and improvements will shine through!
