How Much Does It Cost to Attend West Point Academy?

I know that West Point Academy is a military institution, but I'm curious about the financial side. Are there any costs or tuition fees associated with attending, or is it fully covered? How does it work?

The United States Military Academy at West Point doesn't charge tuition. Instead, the U.S. Army covers the full cost of tuition in exchange for a commitment to active duty service after graduation. This not only includes your academic education but also room and board, along with a monthly stipend.

However, it's not entirely free. There is a "Cadet Personal Money Allowance" that you'll have to pay. This covers the cost of your uniforms, books, a laptop, and other miscellaneous supplies. Typically, West Point withholds some of your monthly stipend to cover this Personal Money Allowance over your four years there.

Upon graduation, you are commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. Then, you're required to serve five years of Active Duty, followed by three years in the Inactive Ready Reserve.

Keep in mind that admission into West Point is extremely competitive and also requires a nomination, often from a member of Congress. Although it’s an arduous process, many find it worthwhile considering the benefits. Aside from receiving a fully funded education, students also gain rigorous military training and leadership development.
