Considering West Point and the Naval Academy – how to choose?

I'm a rising high school junior and am torn between applying to West Point and the Naval Academy. Both seem amazing, but I'm unsure which aligns best with my interests. How did you decide between these two service academies?

Both West Point and the Naval Academy offer exceptional training, rigorous academics, and a unique path towards serving our nation. One way to start would be to consider your long-term career goals.

If you're interested in serving at sea, whether on a surface ship, a submarine, or even a naval aviator or SEAL, the Naval Academy would be a strong place to start. The Naval Academy can also commission graduates into the Marine Corps, which is a unique opportunity if you're interested in the Marine's mission.

On the other hand, West Point is solely focused on producing officers for the Army. If you're more interested in the land-based operations and culture of the Army, West Point would be more appropriate.

Consider the physical environments, as well. West Point is located in upstate New York which is much more rural and mountainous, whereas the Naval Academy is located in Annapolis, Maryland, which has a more urban and coastal environment.

At both academies, engineering is a common path, but both offer a variety of majors so ensure you go with the one that caters to your academic interests as well.

Also, investigate the culture of both institutions. You might talk to current students or alumni to get their perspective on the school culture and which one you might fit into better.

Finally, since these are appointments, it is often advised to apply to both academies in order to increase your chances of acceptance. Remember to also apply for a nomination from your local congressperson, senator, or the Vice President.
