What are the tuition and fees like at the Naval Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Naval Academy and wonder about the cost. How does their tuition work, and are there any fees? I've heard mixed things and want to understand the financial aspect better.

The United States Naval Academy, like the other U.S. service academies, is tuition-free. This means you won't have to pay for your classes or for room and board. However, you are required to serve in the military after graduation. The commitment is typically five years of active duty service and three years of reserve duty.

Although there's no tuition, there are some other costs. For example, students (known as midshipmen) are required to pay for textbooks, uniforms, and other necessary items out of a monthly stipend they receive. This stipend starts at $1,087.80 per month during your plebe (freshman) year, with the amount increasing each year you're at the academy.

Keep in mind, while attending the Academy is financially cost-effective, the service commitment is a significant obligation. It's crucial to understand and be prepared for the commitment if considering this path.
