What Are the Entry Requirements for Coast Guard Academy?

I'm interested in applying to the Coast Guard Academy and want to know what the specific entry requirements are. Are there any unique prerequisites compared to other service academies?

Applying to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is a bit different compared to other service academies. Please note that the Coast Guard Academy is unique among the service academies as they don't require a Congressional nomination.

Here are the entry requirements for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy:

Academic Standards: You should have a strong high school academic record. This includes solid grades in rigorous courses and competitive SAT or ACT scores. Keep in mind that applicants are expected to have high-school level coursework in geometry, algebra, and trigonometry. Coursework in Physics and Chemistry is also ideal.

Physical Fitness: Just like other service academies, the Coast Guard Academy requires applicants to pass a physical fitness exam. This exam includes a 1.5-mile run, push-ups, and sit-ups, so be sure to incorporate regular exercise and stay in good physical shape.

Character and Leadership: The Coast Guard values ethical conduct, honor, and integrity. Extracurricular activities involving leadership roles and voluntary service can demonstrate these values.

Age and Citizenship: Applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 22 on July 1 of the year of entry. Additionally, they must be U.S. citizens and unmarried with no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.

Medical Evaluation: Applicants have to pass a medical exam. While the Academy doesn't provide specific health conditions that may disqualify an applicant, know that you should be in good physical health without conditions that can disrupt service or training.

Once you fulfill these basic requirements, you should be ready to proceed with the application, which includes letters of recommendation, an essay, and an interview.

The USCGA places a heavy emphasis on leadership and character qualities, so try to find opportunities to take on responsibility and to serve others. The Academy's focus on developing lifelong leaders in the maritime profession is unique and something you’ll want to focus on to strengthen your application.
