Transitioning to IT jobs after military service?

For those who've transitioned from military service to IT careers, what advice would you give? Were there specific certifications or pathways that helped the most? I'm trying to align my future goals with this field.

As a college admissions counselor, I often advise individuals transitioning from the military to consider the following:

One, look for programs that specialize in helping veterans transition into IT. There are many non-profit organizations that offer training and mentoring programs to help veterans get into the tech industry. These programs often offer certification courses, and may also provide job placement assistance upon completion.

Two, leverage your military training. The military often issues security clearances and these are highly valuable in the IT industry, specifically in roles such as network security or system administration. Ensure that you mention any security clearances you may have on your resume.

Three, do not underestimate the value of a formal four-year degree in computer science or a related field. While it's true that many tech companies place a lot of emphasis on skills and experience, having a degree can create more opportunities for advancement.

To answer your question about certifications: CompTIA certifications like A+, Network+, and Security+ are often the start points for many IT jobs. Cisco's CCNA, Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals, and Project Management Professional (PMP) certification are also popular and recognized. Certificates can and do enhance your credibility in the tech industry.

Lastly, don't forget to network! Join tech forums, attend job fairs, and use platforms like LinkedIn to connect with IT professionals. Many job openings are never advertised and are instead filled through personal connections, so networking can make all the difference in your job search.

It's a journey, but with the right preparation and resources, breaking into the IT industry after military service can be rewarding. Good luck!
