What do students do at the US Merchant Marine Academy?

I'm curious about what daily life looks like for students at the US Merchant Marine Academy. What activities, studies, or routines are typical for them? I'm considering attending and want to know what to expect.

At the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), or any federal service academy, life is significantly different from what you might experience at a traditional college or university. As a midshipman attending USMMA, your day-to-day life won't solely be about academics – although, of course, that's a significant part of your training. Your time will be structured around a regimented schedule that encompasses academics, physical training, skills development, and leadership building activities.

Starting as a plebe (freshman), you'll undergo a week of indoctrination which prepares you for life at the academy. This includes learning protocols, physical training, and team-building exercises.

The academic curriculum forms a significant part of your daily activities, and it is quite rigorous with a heavy emphasis on marine-related subjects such as maritime law, ship navigation, marine engineering, maritime business, and more. Midshipmen usually have a full schedule of classes on weekdays, often starting early in the morning and continuing until late afternoon.

Outside of classes, physical training is a crucial component of life at the academy. Regular physical fitness tests are held, and all midshipmen are required to participate in a varsity or intramural sport each trimester.

Finally, an important part of the program at USMMA is sea year. After your first year at the academy, you'll spend about a year at sea, spread over two different periods.
