Should I apply for scholarships before applying to college?

I've been looking at a few colleges, and I'm also starting to think about scholarships to help cover costs. Is it a smart move to start applying for scholarships even before I've sent out college applications, or should I wait?

Absolutely, it's a good idea to start applying for scholarships even before you have applied to any colleges. There's no need to wait. Here's why:

1. Early Bird Advantage: Some scholarships have deadlines early in the school year, so the earlier you start looking, the less likely you are to miss out on an opportunity. Additionally, since some students wait until later to start their scholarship search, applying early could potentially reduce the number of competitors vying for the same funds.

2. Spread Out the Workload: College applications and scholarship applications can both be time-consuming processes, so getting a jump start on scholarship applications can help spread out your workload and avoid stress. Especially since college application deadlines are typically towards the end of the calendar year and some scholarships have deadlines in the following spring.

3. Establish a Practice of Writing: Scholarship applications often require essays, which can give you a chance to develop your writing skills and get used to highlighting your unique experiences, strengths, and goals - all of which can be beneficial when you eventually fill out your college applications.

4. Gain an Understanding of your Financial Situation: Having an understanding of your likely scholarship earnings can allow you to have a clearer picture of what you can afford. Keep in mind, however, that some scholarships are school-specific and can only be applied if you are accepted and decide to attend that institution.

Do your research, plan ahead, and keep track of deadlines to ensure you're maximizing the opportunities available to you! Good luck.
