Cumulative GPA: Weighted or Unweighted?

Hi all! I'm a little confused about cumulative GPA. When colleges look at it, do they consider the weighted or unweighted version? How do they differentiate between the two, and which one should I focus on improving?

Hello there! Colleges handle cumulative GPA differently based on their individual admissions policies. Some colleges may choose to look at the weighted GPA, while others may prefer the unweighted version. It's important to note that most colleges will recalculate your GPA using their own system, which may take into account factors like course rigor and available resources at your school. Weighted GPAs usually have more points added for taking honors or AP/IB classes, while unweighted GPAs scale from 0.0 to 4.0 and don't take into consideration the difficulty level of classes.

Instead of focusing solely on improving one version of your GPA, it's more beneficial to prioritize maintaining a strong overall academic performance in challenging courses. This will indicate to colleges your level of commitment and your ability to handle a rigorous curriculum. In the end, it's not only about the numbers but also your demonstrated willingness to challenge yourself and your ability to excel in various subjects. Best of luck!
