Building a list of NYC universities: Which ones to focus on?

I'm trying to come up with a list of universities to potentially apply to in NYC. What should I keep in mind when researching these schools? Are there any that are particularly renowned for student life or specific programs? Looking for ideas on where to start my search!

There are numerous universities in NYC with diverse offerings both academically and on campus life that you might want to consider. Here's a brief rundown of some universities and what they're known for.

Starting with the Ivy League school, Columbia University. A highly competitive school, it's well-regarded across many disciplines but is particularly acclaimed for its programs in the humanities and social sciences, including Philosophy and Political Science. Its location in Harlem provides a vibrant neighborhood that reflects the diversity and energy of the city.

New York University (NYU) is another well-known institution, famed for its Stern School of Business and Tisch School of the Arts. Located in Greenwich Village, NYU students have an entirely unique college experience with the city serving as their campus - there's something always happening around the corner.

The City University of New York (CUNY) system is the public university system of NYC, comprising 25 campuses: eleven senior colleges, seven community colleges, one undergraduate honors college, and seven post-graduate institutions. Baruch College, a part of the CUNY system is known for its Zicklin School of Business, while Hunter College has strong programs in arts and sciences. Being public institutions, they are more affordable than Columbia and NYU.

You also have Pace University which has a renowned performing arts program. This downtown Manhattan university offers strong professional degree programs in areas like business, education, and nursing.

Finally, Fordham University is a Jesuit university with campuses in Manhattan and the Bronx. Known for its pre-professional programs and commitment to using New York City as a learning tool, the Lincoln Center campus very closely connects students to central Manhattan.

Each university has its own strengths and unique qualities, and it's vital to identify what you want out of your college experience. Consider the academic programs, campus culture, access to internships, and cost when researching these schools. This is just a starting point, and I'd advise you to dig deeper into each school's offerings and admissions requirements. Do visits if possible and reach out to current students or alumni for their experiences. Best of luck!
