What is it Like Studying at RISD?

I've been considering applying to the Rhode Island School of Design and wanted to know what current students think. How is the workload and are the resources helpful? Also, any tips on putting together a portfolio for application?

As I understand from several reviews, studying at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is both challenging and rewarding. RISD is known for its rigorous coursework that encourages students to push their creative boundaries.

With regards to workload, expect to be invested in your projects quite a bit. Typical studio classes are about 6 hours long, and you'll usually spend additional time outside of class working on your assignments. This, of course, varies from discipline to discipline. The workload is undoubtedly heavy but it helps foster a strong work ethic and grow your creative abilities.

As for resources, RISD has an extensive library with an impressive collection of art and design books. They also offer various shops, laboratories, and studios catered to different majors. They have metalworking, woodworking, ceramics, printmaking, photography, and digital media labs amongst others. Various workshops are organized throughout the year that range from technical skills to resume building.

Developing a portfolio is a vital part of the application process and is your opportunity to showcase your creative skills. My advice would be to show depth and versatility in your work. Choose pieces that demonstrate your technical skills, idea process, and creativity. It's not just about the finished product, but also about your creative process. You could include work from class assignments, personal projects, or even daily sketches. Be sure to include a mix of observational drawings, as well as pieces that reflect your personal interests and showcase your unique artistic voice.
