How does DVC financial aid work?

I'm trying to figure out the financial aid system at DVC. Do they offer good scholarships or need-based aid? Any tips on how to maximize financial aid packages there?

As a community college, Diablo Valley College (DVC) does indeed offer financial aid to students, though it may be different than what you could expect at a 4-year university. Most of their financial aid comes in the form of federal and state aid, including the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), and California College Promise Grant (formerly known as the BOG Fee Waiver).

First off, you'll want to understand all the costs associated with attending DVC, like tuition, books, transportation, and personal expenses. Once you have an idea of these costs, you can apply for financial aid to help cover them.

To apply for financial aid at DVC, you need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (for undocumented students), which will determine your eligibility for financial aid based on your family’s financial situation. DVC's Financial Aid Office will then use this information to create a financial aid package that could consist of grants, work-study programs, or loans.

You may also be eligible for various scholarships offered by DVC and external organizations. These are offered on the basis of academic achievement, leadership, service in the community, and field of study. It's important to look at all potential scholarship opportunities early, as some may have earlier deadlines.

To help maximize your aid, be sure to file your FAFSA or California Dream Act Application as early as possible, as many types of financial aid are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, try to seek out the many scholarship opportunities available to you, both within DVC and from external sources.

Remember, if you're planning to transfer to a 4-year college after DVC, you'll need to go through the financial aid application process again for that institution.
