What are the top liberal arts colleges for visual arts in Los Angeles?

I'm really interested in pursuing a visual arts degree and I'm considering schools in the Los Angeles area. Could anyone share insights on the top liberal arts colleges there for visual arts? What should I know about their programs?

Los Angeles is home to several well-regarded schools that offer strong visual arts programs. That said, I want to clarify that while many of these schools value the concept of a liberal arts education, they may not be considered "liberal arts colleges" in the traditional sense because they're not small, focus solely on undergraduate education, and offer a broad foundation in the liberal arts. However, they do integrate liberal arts learning into their curriculum.

1. University of Southern California (USC): USC's Roski School of Art and Design has about equal numbers of undergraduates and graduate students, which gives undergrads plenty of opportunities to intermingle, learn, and collaborate with grad students. The BFA in Art program focuses on the role of contemporary art and design within the global community.

2. Occidental College: While strictly a liberal arts college, Occidental offers a versatile Art History and the Visual Arts major. The visual arts component lets students explore the field through courses in painting, drawing, sculpture, and digital media, allowing them to hone their craft, express their creativity, and make their artistic mark.

3. Loyola Marymount University (LMU): LMU's College of Communication and Fine Arts provides a distinct focus on studio arts where the students can craft their skills in areas such as drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and printmaking. It offers a B.A. in Studio Arts and an animation program too.

Each of these programs is pretty distinct, so the best for you depends on your career goals and preferred mode of expression in visual arts. No matter which you choose, Los Angeles is a vibrant city with a rich artistic culture - a great place to study the visual arts. Consider visiting (if possible), reaching out to current students, or faculty to get a sense of which environment suits you best. Also, looking into their different course offerings and faculty can provide further insight.
