Do dual citizenships affect enlisting in the US military?

I'm a junior with dual citizenship and I'm considering enlisting in the military. Could my dual citizenship status cause any issues or complications with the enlistment process? How do they handle situations like this?

In the United States military, dual citizenship itself is not a disqualifier for enlistment. However, the process might be a bit more complex and certain security clearance levels may not be as readily accessible for those with dual nationality.

While enlisting, the military will conduct a background check—this is standard for all recruits. Having obligations or allegiances to a foreign country can potentially cause issues when it comes to determining security clearances. This is not necessarily a roadblock, but it may limit your options when choosing a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), as some require higher security clearance levels.

For instance, if your career plan in the military requires a high-level security clearance, the US government may request you to renounce your other citizenship. The renunciation of citizenship largely depends on the policies of the other country, but it's feasible that the U.S. military could require you to relinquish ties if it is considered to be in the interest of national security.

If you're seriously considering a military path, I suggest reaching out to a local recruiter who can provide more specific advice based on your unique circumstances. Be sure to clearly communicate your aspirations and ask about any potential limitations due to your dual citizenship status. A recruiter will be able to give you the most accurate and up-to-date information for your situation.
