Guide to Enlisting in the Military

Where can I find a beginner's guide to enlisting in the military? I want to understand the entire process and what to expect if I decide to go this route after high school.

Here is the basic enlistment process:

1. Research: It's important to do your research first, given that there are six different branches of the U.S. military you can enlist in (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and as of 2019, the Space Force). Each has different specialties and responsibilities, so you'll want to understand what interests you most. Think about what you envision yourself doing, look into the available roles, and consider the different lifestyles each branch offers.

2. Meet with a Recruiter: Once you've done some initial research, schedule a meeting with a branch-specific military recruiter. They can provide in-depth information about the enlistment process, training, and the expectations of service in that particular branch. Be sure to come prepared with questions.

3. ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Test: You will need to take the ASVAB, which measures your abilities in different areas and helps the military determine what jobs you're best suited for.

4. Physical Exam: Every recruit is required to pass a physical examination to ensure they're in good health and physically capable of undergoing training.

5. Choose a MOS (Military Occupation Specialty): Based on your ASVAB scores and physical examination, you will be shown a list of jobs available to you in the branch of the military you're enlisting in. You can choose from this list, but note that availability can change based on the branch's current needs.

6. Enlistment: After choosing your MOS, you'll sign an enlistment contract, which often includes an enlistment bonus depending on the MOS you choose.

7. Basic Training: This is where your military service truly begins. Basic training varies in length and intensity depending on the branch, but its purpose is to transition you from a civilian to a soldier.
