What does a graphic designer do and how can I pursue this career?

I'm thinking about becoming a graphic designer after high school. Can anyone explain what a graphic designer job involves day-to-day? Also, what should I study in college, or are there specific skills I should focus on? Thanks!

Graphic designers essentially communicate concepts through visual content. This could be in the form of digital designs, print designs, or even animations. Their daily tasks often include creating and editing images, selecting typefaces, developing layout designs, and eventually presenting the design to clients or project team.

In order to pursue graphic design as a career, you'd typically study graphic design or a related field in a bachelor's program. Coursework often covers principles of design, printing techniques, art history, and website design. Some programs consist of classes in marketing, business, and professional practices as well, which can be helpful in the job market.

Aside from formal education, graphic design is a field in which your portfolio and practical skills can sometimes weigh more than your degree. You'll want to develop a strong working knowledge of software used in the industry such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. You should also develop a personal style, and create a strong portfolio that showcases your work as you progress in your studies and skills. You might consider internships and freelance assignments while you're studying to gain experience and build your portfolio.

Graphic design requires creativity, technical skills, and the ability to work towards a client's vision. You'll need to be able to take abstract concepts and turn them into visually compelling designs. In addition to design skills, strong communication and teamwork skills can be invaluable, as you'll frequently be working within teams or directly with clients.
