What Is the US Military's Minimum Enlistment Age?

I'm considering the military as a post-high school option. What's the minimum age requirement for enlistment in the US military? Are there any exceptions or specific conditions for enlisting at this age?

The minimum enlistment age in the U.S. Military branches - which include the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force - is typically 18 years old. However, 17-year-olds may also enlist if they have parental or guardian consent.

Keep in mind that enlisting at 17 doesn't mean you'll immediately begin active duty. If you haven't yet graduated from high school, you would usually enlist under the Delayed Entry Program (DEP), which allows you to commit to basic training at a future date. In most cases, high school students who enlist under the DEP go to basic training the summer after they graduate.

There are also educational requirements for enlistment. Typically, you would need to have a high school diploma. In some cases, a GED may be accepted, but a high school diploma is generally preferred.

Remember, each branch of the military has its own set of requirements and policies, so you need to contact your nearest recruiter for the branch you're interested in for the most accurate information about you. They can provide comprehensive insights into specific age, education, physical health, and moral standards.
