What's involved in a vocational nursing assistant role?

I’m exploring career options and came across vocational nursing assistants. Can someone explain their responsibilities and day-to-day tasks? I'm interested to know if this could be a good fit for someone who's compassionate and detail-oriented.

As a vocational nursing assistant, frequently referred to as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN), your primary focus will be providing basic medical and nursing care to patients. This includes measuring and recording patients' vital signs, collecting patient data, and taking care of general hygiene needs like bathing.

LVNs often start or discontinue IVs and monitor their patients for any abnormal reactions to medications or treatments. They may also dress wounds, give injections, and provide patient education on post-treatment care at home (for instance, changing dressings).

Your tasks may also involve supporting patients' mobility at times, as some patients may require assistance with daily activities or transferring from a wheelchair to a bed. Of course, every task must be executed with meticulous attention to detail to ensure that all care is given safely and correctly.

Vocational nursing assistants work under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or doctors, reporting back any significant changes in a patient's condition.

In terms of your work environment, it can vary widely. LVNs can work in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, private homes, group homes, assisted living facilities, and even some schools. The day-to-day job often requires significant time on your feet and some lifting when assisting patients.

Finally, being a vocational nursing assistant requires both compassion and professional distance. You might often be providing care for patients who are dealing with discomfort or illness, so an empathetic bedside manner is key. However, still, maintaining professional boundaries is also important for ethical and practical reasons.

In sum, if you're a detail-oriented person with a compassionate heart and interested in a healthcare career, being a vocational nursing assistant could very well be an excellent fit.
