When to take ACT or SAT?

Hey everyone! I'm a junior currently planning my standardized testing schedule for this year. When does everyone recommend taking the ACT or SAT? Is there a specific time frame or strategy that works best? Thanks!

Hello! It's good to see that you're planning ahead for your standardized testing. Finding the right time to take the ACT or SAT can vary depending on your schedule and commitments. Typically though, most students take their first attempt at the SAT or ACT in the winter or spring of their junior year. This timeframe provides ample time to become familiar with the test format, content, and strategies.

If you're aiming to apply Early Decision or Early Action, consider taking the test by the latest in October of your senior year. This will give you enough time to get your scores before early deadlines, which usually fall around November 1st. Keep in mind that college applications are time-consuming, so it's best to have your testing completed before you start working on them in full force.

Regarding a strategy, many students find it beneficial to take a diagnostic SAT or ACT test early in their junior year to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This can help them decide which test to focus on and develop a study plan accordingly. After the initial test, you might consider taking it once more during your junior year to gauge your progress and adjust your preparation as needed.

Finally, consider leaving some buffer time in your senior year to retake the test if you feel that you can improve your scores. Many students see an increase in their scores after a second or third attempt. As test scores play a significant role in college admissions, having a plan that allows for potential retakes can be beneficial.

Overall, constructing a timeline that accounts for your course load, extracurricular commitments, and college application deadlines can set you on the path to standardized testing success. Good luck!
