Hey everyone, I'm from Texas, and I'm really interested in pursuing medicine. I heard about combined 7-year medical programs but I'm not sure if any are available in Texas. Do you guys know if there are 7 year medical programs in Texas, and if so, which schools offer them?
Hey there! As of now, Texas doesn't offer any 7-year medical programs. Most combined BS/MD or BA/MD programs in the U.S. are concentrated in the Northeast or Midwest regions.
However, there are still excellent opportunities for pursuing medicine in Texas. Universities like UT Austin, Rice University, and Baylor University have strong pre-medical programs and connections with medical schools. While you would still need to go through the traditional 4-year undergraduate program followed by a 4-year medical school, these schools can absolutely provide you with the foundation and resources necessary to excel in your pursuit of a medical career.
You may also want to explore the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) in Texas, which is designed to provide financial and academic support for economically disadvantaged college students interested in pursuing medicine. Participants are guaranteed admission to one of the nine participating Texas medical schools upon completing their undergraduate degree, assuming they continue to meet certain requirements throughout college.
If you're still open to considering medical programs outside of Texas, you can explore various combined 7-year medical programs, such as those offered by Brown University, Northwestern University, and Boston University. Good luck in your pursuit of a medical career!
