When to send an update letter?

Hi everyone, I'm wondering when would be the right time to send an update letter to colleges I applied to? And what type of info or accomplishments should I include? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello! It's a good idea to send an update letter to colleges after you've applied under certain circumstances. Typically, the best time to send an update letter is:

1. Midway through your senior year (after first semester grades are released)

2. Any time you have significant news or achievements to share (e.g., major accomplishments, awards, leadership roles, etc.)

Before sending an update letter, consider if the new information or accomplishment is substantial enough to warrant an update. You should include only those updates that show a significant improvement or achievement since you submitted your application. Some examples of relevant updates could be:

1. Improved grades or new course achievements

2. Additional standardized test scores (if the college still considers them)

3. New awards, recognitions, or honors

4. Changes in your extracurricular activities or leadership roles

5. Any additional contributions to your school or local community that were not previously mentioned

When sending an update letter, make sure to be concise and thoughtful in your communication. Express gratitude to the college for considering your application, provide the update, and explain why the new information is relevant or important to your application. However, avoid sending too many updates or sending updates with minor information, as this can come across as if you're trying to fill up the college's inbox and may not add significant value to your application.

Remember, colleges appreciate genuine and thoughtful updates that showcase your growth and commitment to education, so make sure to focus on the most important achievements and developments since your application submission.

Best of luck!
