How do music therapists help people?

I'm super interested in how music can be used in therapy, and I think music therapy could be a fulfilling career. What exactly does a music therapist do, and what kind of training might I need after high school?

Music therapists use the power of music for healing and wellbeing, adding a creative and expressive outlet to the therapeutic process. They integrate techniques such as creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music.

Music therapy is suitable for people of all ages and all kinds of medical, developmental, and mental health conditions. For instance, music therapists can use rhythmic motor activities to help a stroke patient regain movement or use songs to assist a person with Alzheimer's in recalling memories.

In terms of training, being a music therapist is a path that generally requires at least a bachelor's degree in music therapy or a related field such as psychology. College-level music therapy programs include coursework in music, psychology, music therapy practice, and various patient populations. Many programs also require internships or practicums.

After the degree, you will likely need to complete a supervised clinical internship. You're also required to become certified, which involves passing an examination administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists. Maintaining certification requires ongoing continuing education.

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) is a great resource for further information - they offer educational programs, resources, and annual conferences. Expect to immerse yourself in both therapeutic and musical training. This is a career mix of science, social science, and art!
