What does a Coast Guard member do?

I'm exploring options after high school and the Coast Guard seems intriguing. Can anyone provide insight into the typical duties of someone in the Coast Guard and what kind of training I would need?

As part of one of the six U.S. military branches, Coast Guard members have quite diverse responsibilities. They're tasked with ensuring the maritime safety, security, and stewardship of the nation, which involves a wide range of duties.

Coast Guard roles can include search and rescue missions, law enforcement (including drug and illegal immigration patrols), marine environmental protection, and maintaining navigational aids such as lighthouses, just to name a few. The specific roles and responsibilities can depend on your assignment and area of specialization within the Coast Guard.

In terms of training, the journey begins with basic training at Cape May, New Jersey, which lasts for about 8 weeks. Here, you'll learn essential skills such as nautical knowledge, military customs, firefighting, water survival, marksmanship, and more.
