What does a forensic odontologist do?

I'm interested in forensic science and came across forensic odontology. What exactly do forensic odontologists do, and what kind of academic path should I take in college if I want to pursue this career?

A forensic odontologist, or a forensic dentist, uses their expertise in dentistry to help solve legal issues or criminal cases often related to the identification of unknown remains or bite mark analysis. They do so by comparing dental records, examining bite marks, and assessing dental damages or anomalies, which can be crucial in identifying a victim or a perpetrator.

Now speaking on the academic path: generally, to become a forensic odontologist, you'll need to start by earning a Bachelor's degree, preferably in a science-related field like biology or chemistry. This will prepare you for dental school, where you will earn a Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctorate of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD), depending on the program. Admission to dental schools can be quite competitive, so making sure to keep a strong GPA in undergraduate and completing Dental Admission Test (DAT) can help your chances.

Post-dental school, you would complete a residency in a general dental practice or one of the nine recognized dental specialties.
