980 PSAT Score as a Freshman

Hey guys, I'm currently a high school freshman and I recently got a 980 on my PSAT. Is this a good score for a freshman? How much should I aim to improve before taking the SAT in my junior year?

Hello! A 980 on the PSAT as a freshman is definitely a solid score, considering you still have plenty of time to improve before taking the SAT junior year. It's important to remember that the PSAT is primarily used as a practice test for the SAT and as a qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship program when you take it in your junior year.

To determine how much you should aim to improve, it's helpful to consider your target colleges and the typical SAT scores for their admitted students. For example, if you're aiming for highly competitive schools, their accepted students usually have SAT scores in the 1400-1600 range. Identify the average scores for the colleges on your list, and this will give you a better idea of the target score to pursue.

Between now and junior year, focus on strong academic performance, especially in your math and English courses, as they will prepare you for the SAT. To improve your PSAT/SAT score, consider self-study methods like using Khan Academy's free SAT prep materials or acquiring a prep book. You could also explore group classes or one-on-one tutoring if you feel like you would benefit from additional guidance. As you progress through high school and take more advanced coursework, your score will likely improve naturally as well.

Don't forget to balance your test preparation with your extracurricular activities, as colleges value well-rounded applicants. Participate in clubs, organizations, or teams that align with your interests to showcase your passions outside of academics. By junior year, take the PSAT again to see how much you have improved and use that score to gauge your preparedness for the SAT.

Good luck!
